  2. The One-Legged Torii

    May 27, 2023, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
    @
    Branigan Cultural Center

There stands a well-known "one-legged" torii (archway) in Nagasaki, Japan. It belongs to the Sanno Shrine, which is located only 800 meters away from the epicenter of the atomic bomb. The shockwaves were so great, one of the support columns was knocked down. However, the other somehow remained standing and kept the gate upright and continued to support itself. While Sanno Shrine has been reconstructed, this torii remains the same as it carefully balances itself and serves as a reminder of the nuclear destruction that took place. Take home a completed torii statue and carefully paint away one leg until only one remains. You may keep this statue and reflect on the history of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Ages 13+.
