[ARCHIVED] Public Works Department to Observe National Work Zone Awareness Week

Public Works to Observe National Work Zone Awareness Week

The City of Las Cruces Public Works Department will recognize National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 26 through April 30, 2021.

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), now in its 21st year, is a public awareness campaign that spreads the message throughout the U.S. that everyone shares the responsibility for work zone safety. The City’s Public Works Department urges the public to drive carefully in and around work zones.

The theme of this year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week is “Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives.”

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City’s Public Works Department will not be able to organize large events in recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week. If the pandemic continues to ease, the City’s Public Works Department hopes a more open environment next year will enable increased public interaction.

On Monday, the Public Works Department will conduct safety training sessions and will heighten focus on safety awareness within work zones.

Public Work Department will also observe “Go Orange Day,” on Wednesday, April 28. On “Go Orange Day,” roadway safety professionals for the City of Las Cruces and across the U.S. will wear orange to show their support of work zone safety.

Despite the pandemic, Las Cruces residents and the public can participate in National Work Zone Awareness Week, by using social media, in the following ways:

  • Post and share all week on social media and use the hashtags #NWZAW, #WorkZoneSafety, and #Orange4Safety. The public is invited to participate in a social media storm on Thursday, April 29.
  • Add the NWZAW Facebook frame to your profile picture.
  • Get the virtual background to use during Zoom and  Microsoft Teams meetings.
  • Download the official 18-inch by 24-inch poster.
  • Participate in the texting challenge, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 29 by typing this year’s theme on your phone into your social media channel.

Residents and the public are reminded to drive and work safely to help save lives. With everyone working together, we can achieve zero deaths on our roads and in work zones.
