"Rise, Explore, Persevere: Women In STEM" Opens at the Museum of Nature and Science

Museums

The Las Cruces Museum System is proud to announce the Museum of Nature & Science has been awarded a grant from the Association of Science and Technology Centers, with support from Lyda Hill Philanthropies and the IF/THEN® Initiative, to produce an exhibition promoting women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

The exhibition, “Rise, Explore, Persevere: Women in STEM” will be on view at the Museum of Nature & Science, 411 N. Main St., beginning Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. The exhibition is presented in English and Spanish and will continue through June 2023. Admission to the museum is free.

Deborah Berebichez, one of 18 IF/THEN® Ambassadors included in the exhibit, is the first Mexican woman to get a doctorate degree in physics from Stanford. Co-host of the Discovery Channel’s “Outrageous Acts of Science” Dr. Berebichez is also the Chief Data Scientist at Metis where she leads the creation of data science training programs.

Drawing from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry exhibition “Inspired Design/Diseño con inspiración” and the Museum of Science, Boston exhibition “Faces of Science: Ambassadors for Equity,” the exhibit introduces visitors to women whose work addresses engineering and design problems, socio-environmental issues, and social justice.

Launched by Lyda Hill Philanthropies, the IF/THEN® Initiative is a nationwide effort to advance women innovators in STEM fields and inspire the next generation of girls. Built on the mantra, “If we support a woman in STEM, then she can change the world,” IF/THEN® has worked with partners across industries to create a diverse coalition that is activating a culture shift by undertaking projects to increase the representation of women and gender minorities in STEM fields.

The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the understanding of and engagement with science and technology among all people.

The Museum of Nature & Science is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1. Visit the Museum System website at: https://www.lascruces.gov/museums or follow the Las Cruces Museums on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @LCMuseums.
