Tree Stewards

Engage the citizens of Las Cruces through the Tree Steward volunteer program to build a support network that enhances the trees and shade in public spaces. This will be accomplished through a partnership of the Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Las Cruces Beautiful to recruit, train, and engage Tree Stewards in enhancing the community's urban forest. Empowered and Trained Volunteers will plant trees, prune established trees, care for established trees, educate the public about trees, and care and advocate for trees and shade in public spaces.

Vision

Las Cruces will become a Tree City USA that values and supports trees and shade for today and for future generations.

Goals & Objectives

The Parks and Recreation Department will recruit and train 20 volunteer Las Cruces Tree Stewards annually. The Tree Stewards will significantly help the department expand its new planting of trees and to better care for the existing landscape inventories.

Committed volunteers dedicate themselves to improving and enhancing shade canopy and will serve as advocates in the community to empower neighborhoods, homeowners, and residents to beautify and care for their public and private spaces. Tree Stewards will provide an innovative demonstration of how a citizen/public partnership expands the capacity of the whole community.
